I want to start backing up my files online. I need suggestions!
I’ve got a bunch of large files (5 GB +), as well as some standard word/excel documents that I need to keep safe. I think online backup or online storage is the best solution because it can be relatively inexpensive (or free), and it’s usually easy to use. I want something that will backup automatically, or with little effort. And I want to be able to easily access my files if needed. I would like some suggestions on where I should go? What companies are good? What should I look for before buying? Is there a difference between what I can buy and what is available for free?

Mozy
I think there isn't any free online backup provider for this large amount of data. You should check Mozy (http://mozy.com/) or Norton Online Backup (http://www.symantec.com/norton/online-backup)

I also wouldn't recommend
I also wouldn't recommend trusting a free online storage service if the data is very important (which it obviously is, otherwise you wouldn't need to back it up!). Data backup in general is an area where most often the price does directly reflect the quality of the service, be it actual volume or credibility and security of the online storage. Think about buying a crib for your newborn son. Price is a factor in the decision, but you certainly wouldn't skimp on paying a little extra for guaranteed safety and quality.
online storage
I disagree, an external hard
I disagree, an external hard drive is NOT safe enough. Why? Because these drives fail all the time. I was backing up religiously to a $100 external USB drive last year. One day, I plugged it in just to check it and none of the data could be read and this drive was only about 60 days old when it crashed!
Using an online backup service copies your data to a secure server in a different city. It runs continuously in the background so you don't have to remember to backup your files. And best of all, no single event, like a hard drive crash, or a flood, or a fire, can delete your precious memories or documents. Best of all, they are inexpensive. Personally I use the best ZenOK Online Backup

ZenOK Backup prices
I'm not sure about their prices. First 150 GB is for free and the next 150 is for $34/ year? Or there isn't any free storage? The price is very good I think.
